1. What is the concept behind the Million Dollar Composition?

The idea is simple: to make $1m (US) by selling 4,000 eighth notes for a total sum of one $Million. Hence, 'The Million Dollar Composition'. The composition is divided into 25 note systems, each covering 5 measures of 8 eighth notes in 4 staves (4,000 notes in total).

You can buy as many notes as you like, as long as they are available (see the live stats in the top right corner of the page). When you buy notes, you can add any advertisement image (e.g. your logo) in the upper 500 pixels of advertisement space (width 20 x height 25 pixels) per eighth note you order (That translates to an initial cost of 2 ¢ per pixel advertisement space). However, no obscene or offensive images are allowed.

The notes you buy will be integrated and displayed on the 'The Million $ Composition' homepage permanently. The homepage will not change. I guarantee to keep it online for at least 5 years, but hopefully much longer. So, in the long run, you will be owning a note of 'Internet history'!

2. Is this just another copy-cat/rip-off of Alex Tew's Milliondollarhomepage?

No, definitively not!

However, it is obvious that the development of the Million Dollar Composition concept has been stimulated by the success of Alex Tew's Milliondollarhomepage. I have taken up the concept and added more than just a twist. I developed it further into a broader concept combining the advertising-by-the-pixel idea with another creative dimension/universe: music composition.

As a by-product I (think I) invented a new concept in music composition (at least I haven't heard of it before): I provide a platform that allows various people worldwide to compose a piece of music within a remote team of composers, networked together using the Internet!

3. Don't you think that the concept of music composition within a remote team, networked together using the Internet will lead to unmelodic strange music?

This concept of collaborative music composition contradicts the standard way of music composition. Usually this is a solitary activity: most musical compositions are the work of a single person or a limited group of people interacting personally, trying to satisfy only their own distinctive musical taste. However, the contribution to the Million $ Composition requires a completely different mindset, a team-based approach. Collaboration for composers can be a very productive endeavour. It produces music which would have unlikely been produced individually and also obliges the composers to make conceptual compromises they might not ususally have to do. It frees up the creative spirit as each artist has to let go of their individual vision to accomodate the thinking of the other. The OTHER is the crucial element in collaboration, it not alone designates the other composer but also implicates the unseen, inexperienced, unknowable, unthinkable and inconceivable of the former. I am really looking forward to the outcome, as the composers are advertisers at the same time. Thus, they have to consider the audience as they want to reach out to a larger audience and attract them to the music as well as to their advertisements.

4. Can you explain the 'graded' pricing scheme?

In contrast to the usual 'fixed price scheme' (e.g. $250 in order to reach a total of 1 $Million) I decided to have a 'graded' pricing scheme: the price per Eighth note increases automatically every time notes are added to the Million $ Composition starting from a base price of $2 for the first sold eighth note. However, the total sum will be 1 $Million! This grading of the price goes in parallel to the anticipated web traffic and the publicity of the Million $ Composition (at least to some degree) and is much fairer than the 'fixed price scheme'. As a positive side effect, the courageous early customers are somehow rewarded: they pay a fair fee concerning the (current) price to advertisement ratio. In addition, the early birds can pick the prime locations for the discount prices. The figure illustrates the estimated price per eighth note sold:

5. Why are there grey C notes indicated as available notes?

For demonstration purposes: To indicate the power of the concept I decided to have an initial preset to let you hear and see 'something' (even when it is quite boring). I think it is better than seeing empty note systems and hearing the 'sound of silence'. However, the grey C notes and eighth breaks are available and will be replaced whith your contribution when you buy the corresponding notes.

6. How can I generate an image of my notation with the note system lines aligned correctly?

I recommend the exclusive usage and modification of the correctly sized Note Image Templates. I admit that the link is somehow hidden in the text and you have to hover your mouse cursor over the corresponding text (here as well) to identify the link by the appearance of a mouse-over tooltip and a slight change in the text colour.

7. Why should I buy your notes?

Because you want to increase your website traffic! You will have an image (note plus 500 pixel advertisement space) and a link to YOUR website on the MillionDollarComposition homepage, a site that could potentially be seen and be heard repeatedly by millions of people over the coming years.

This is a unique valuable marketing opportunity e.g. for creative musicians, composers, producers, songwriters, improvisers, interpreters, DJs and companies in the marketplace of music production, e.g. publishing companies, musical instrument producers, etc. (but not only limited to these).

This site has the potential to receive international media coverage analogous to Alex Tew's MillionDollarHomepage.com who received over 1.5 million unique visitors and over 2.7 million page impressions in only 7 days, leading to huge exposure and click-throughs for the advertisers on his homepage. The MillionDollarComposition.com site will be online for the next 5 years, that's guaranteed, but the idea is to keep it online forever. The long-term value of advertising on this site is immense. So you really could own a note of 'Internet history'!

8. How long will this site be online?

The site will be online for 5 years guaranteed (at least until January 29th, 2011), however the aim is to keep the site online forever.
